Towards the end of July, 1916, 18th Division, including 11th Royal Fusiliers of 54 Brigade left the Somme, where they had been heavily involved in the fighting on the first day of the battle there and later at Trones Wood. They moved north to the front line at Erquinghem, near Armentières and did not return to the Somme battlefield until late September. However, George White was killed in action on 23rd August, 1916, on a day when 11th Royal Fusiliers were out of the line, cleaning and resting at Erquinghem, and he is buried in a cemetery on the Somme, many miles to the south. The only explanation is that he was attached to another unit at the time, but there is no information regarding this.
